Details
The Dartmouth Medical School sponsors the two-year-old CHaD Half
Marathon, which welcomed more than 900 runners in 2007 and who, along
with the event’s many volunteers, helped raise just over
$142,000 for the Children’s Hospital at Dartmouth (CHaD).
Known perhaps most for its plentiful downhill stretches that offer
participants a chance to achieve fast (and personal record)
half-marathon finishing times, the race is also exceptional for its
afternoon starting time – 4:00 PM – and for its
views of this iconic college’s beautiful campus, including
the Dartmouth College Green, the Hanover Center, and the Connecticut
River.
Open to a maximum of 1,000 individual runners and 100 team relay
participants, this point-to-point race starts at just under 1,200 feet
above sea level and sees its steepest hills around miles 2 and 3. After
the third mile marker, the course begins a long, gradual downhill (with
a few moderate hills thrown in for good measure) that descends about
600 feet and doesn’t end until you reach mile 10, after which
the course rises gently toward the finish.
Runners are cautioned to
remain on the left of the center of the road on the stretch along
Dogford Road (between miles 4 and 5) and that sidewalks may not be used
anywhere along the course.
Parking for all runners is provided at the Dartmouth Medical School
campus, from which participants will be shuttled by bus to the starting
line at the Village Green in the nearby town of Etna. The finish line
(it is not marked) lies at the Dartmouth College Green. For those who
don’t want to run the full 13.1 miles by themselves, a
three-segment relay race is also available for 3-person teams.

Weather & Climate
The late summer weeks bring some of the nicest weather of the year to
the Hanover area, with August temperatures that average between
57°F and 81°F and rainfall averages of 3.7 inches for
the month.
