New Hampshire > Monadnock Half Marathon & 5K
Jaffrey, NH • Sunday, August 10, 2014 • Course Map
With the rocky summit of nearby Mount Monadnock, one of the world's most frequently climbed mountains and still a popular spot for hikers and mountaineering enthusiasts today, looking down over the town of Jaffrey, runners will suit up this summer for the 4th annual Monadnock Half Marathon in 2014, a race that will also feature a two-person relay half marathon, a 5K and a fun run for kids.
Set to take runners along a combination of paved country roads and dirt roads around this quintessential New England small town -- about 5,000 residents call Jaffrey home -- the race will feature a course that's both easy enough for beginners and intermediate-level runners, organizers say, but which also features some challenging hills for experienced runners.
The USA Track & Field-approved course for the race will follow an out-and-back loop route that starts and finishes just east of downtown Jaffrey along Route 124, near the town's airport. From there, runners will head out on the first loop of the 13.1-mile route, heading east along 124 and then turning left onto Stratton Road for a stretch that takes runners along Stratton, Squantum Road, Hunt Road and Prescott Road before bringing them back to pass the starting line a second time on 124.
The second loop of the race route begins after runners head west back toward downtown and then turn right onto Oak Street, followed by quick turns left onto Webster and then right again onto Peterborough Street, or Highway 202.
This stretch takes runners northward for the next couple of miles, all the way toward the nearby community of Hadley, where runners turn right onto Hadley Road and then head south back in the direction of the Jaffrey Airport, along Old Sharon and Witt Hill Roads before turning back onto 124 for the home stretch into the race finish line.
Along the route, organizers say they plan to distribute as many as 3,000 cowbells to spectators lining the roads and streets, in part to give runners a feel for this part of New England, with a signature souvenir of this rural area.
Runners should note also that the race's most challenging hill occurs just as they're running between the mile 11 and 12 markers along Witt Hill Road, so they plan to have plenty of spectators out there clanging their cowbells to provide plenty of motivation to make it up the hill.
Race Weather & Climate
