Details
Bright, sunny skies with plenty of breeze graced the 35th running of
the Jersey Shore Half Marathon in 2007, along a fast and flat
USATF-certified
race that is among the oldest distance running events held anywhere in
New Jersey. From the starting line at the Gateway National Recreational
Area on the Sandy Hook peninsula, runners follow a double loop course
over paved city streets to the lighthouse area at the north end of the
city, back to the park for the finish.
Open to runners, walkers and wheelchair participants, the race welcomed
631 competitors for the 2007 event, and every year draws big crowds of
spectators out to cheer on everyone taking part. Some participants in
the race, however, felt the course was lacking in providing views of
the oceanfront, something they expected to see from the
event’s name.
While you’re in the area and if you have time, stick around
for a tour of the Gateway National Recreational Area, a 26,000-acre
park with natural features such as marshes, sandy beaches, and wildlife
sanctuaries and man-made structures like its historic military
installations. The park is noteworthy as the first urban recreational
area of its kind set aside by the federal government, along with San
Francisco’s Golden Gate National Recreation Area.

Weather & Climate
The Sandy Hook park area tends to track pretty closely the weather
conditions of nearby New York City, with mild to moderate temperatures
in the fall and low humidity. Temperatures in September in nearby
Highlands, N.J. average between 61°F and 76°F, while
precipitation averages just over 3.4 inches for the month.
