New Jersey > North Jersey Half Marathon & 2-Person Relay
Pompton Plains, NJ  •  Saturday, October 19, 2013  •  Course Map

Set for its 3rd annual running in the weeks leading up to Halloween in late October 2013 -- after being run as the Pequannock Half Marathon in its inaugural year -- the North Jersey Half Marathon and Relay takes runners on a mostly flat and fast out-and-back loop run along the streets of this small township near the mountains of northern New Jersey, just a short drive from nearby New York City.

The race starts and finishes right in front of Greenview Park (last year's race started at Pequannock Township High School, at the corner of Sunset and Van Ness Avenue). From there, runners head out west along Sunset and then north along West Parkway, starting a clockwise loop that will take them along Boulevard, Ryerson Road, Comly Road and Beaver Brook Road, before turning in toward Greenview Park to head toward a second loop around West Parkway.

Runners finish the race on the campus of the high school, running through the parking lot to cross the finish line on the school's track and field oval. Some of the hillier sections of the course -- including the Comly Road trestle -- have been removed for this year's race, leaving it even flatter and faster than before, organizers note.

The race is scheduled to start at 8:30 AM sharp, and the number of entrants will be capped at 1,500 runners total, so prospective runners are encouraged to sign up early. Just over 350 runners crossed the finish line at the event's 2011 running, including more than 230 finishers in the half marathon alone -- last year's race also included a 5K.

Race Weather & Climate

Nestled just to the southeast of the Rampopo Mountains in northern New Jersey, about 25 miles northwest of New York City, Pompton Plains typically sees October temperatures that average between 41°F and 63°F, while rainfall totals average just under 3.7 inches, making October one of the town's driest months of the year.

On the day of the race (Oct. 19), the average low is 40°F and the average high is 61°F.
