New Mexico > Day of the Tread Bike Rides, Marathon, Half Marathon, 10K & 5K
Albuquerque, NM • Sunday, October 28, 2012 • Course Map
Runners, bikers and walkers are all welcome at the Halloween-themed "Day of the Tread" races, which mark their sixth annual running in late October 2012 with five cycling races -- including 12-, 26-, 54-, 80- and 100-mile races -- as well as a full marathon and half marathon for runners and 10K and 5K races, which participants may choose either to run or walk.
The half and the full marathons follow point-to-point courses that start in the Mesa del Sol area that lies just a few miles south of the Albuquerque International Sunport, where runners will make their way past both the Hard Rock Pavilion concert venue and Albuquerque Studios, which has served as the filming location for movies like 2009's Due Date with Robert Downey Jr. and Zach Galifianakis.
From the starting line on Bobby Foster Road, near the intersection with University Boulevard -- runners will be provided shuttle bus transport from the finish line near the Embassy Suites to the starting line -- runners in both the full and the half marathon start the race at 8:00 AM and then head out on what is an almost totally flat course for the first five miles, which wind through out-and-back stretches past the soundstages at Albuquerque Studios and the International School at Mesa del Sol.
The terrain here is all paved roads out on wide-open desert-like plains, surrounded by hills and mountains. Once runners make it back to University Boulevard after passing the mile 5 marker, the course dips for the first change in elevation, a drop of about 300 feet between the mile 5 and 6 markers, and then rises again once runners start making their way north along University. That's followed by the next few miles unfolding along University as runners make their way into Albuquerque, passing the Albuquerque International Sunport along the way, along an overall downhill descent punctuated here and there with minor rolling hills.
At Avenida Cesar Chavez, runners turn off University and head west toward downtown Albuquerque, making their way through the South Broadway and Huning Highland historic district areas, with the last couple of miles unfolding north along Edith Boulevard. The final mile of the race turns right on Mountain Road and then again onto Woodward Place, where runners cross the finish line in front of the Embassy Suites hotel.
