Event
Details
Formerly run on a double-loop 13.1-mile course that featured its
starting and finish lines at Albuquerque's world-famous Balloon Fiesta
Park, the Albuquerque Unser Half Marathon saw an all-new course for its
spring 2009 running, a new point-to-point course that takes runners
through the city's North Valley and Los Ranchos neighborhoods, as well
as through Rio Grande Boulevard and the city's scenic Casa Rodena
Winery.
Just over 300 runners flock to this fast and
mostly flat half marathon event, which also includes a 10K, 5K and
3-person half-marathon relay race. Much of the second half of the half
marathon race features views of the Rio Grande Valley State Park, which
hugs the winding river by the same name along the last few miles of the
course, which finishes at the Unser Racing Museum on Montano Road.
The starting and finish lines for the race lie just a short drive from
the park that hosts
Albuquerque's annual International Balloon Fiesta, held each year
during the first week in October. From its first year in 1972, the
festival has grown from hosting a total of 13 balloons to several
hundred balloons today, with over 1,000 pilots at the helm of balloons
of every color combination and design imaginable.
