Details
Just over 300 runners flocked to the world-famous Balloon Fiesta Park
for the 2007 running of the Albuquerque "Unser" Half Marathon (formerly
the Fiesta de Albuquerque Half Marathon), which
takes runners on a double-loop course that starts and finishes at the
park grounds and runs through the streets of the city nearby. Fast and
mostly flat, the race takes runners across a combination of paved
surfaces and asphalt bicycle trails, and also includes a 10K, 5K and
3-person half-marathon relay race.
The starting and finish lines for the race are at the park that hosts
Albuquerque's annual International Balloon Fiesta, held each year
during the first week in October. From its first year in 1972, the
festival has grown from hosting a total of 13 balloons to several
hundred balloons today, with over 1,000 pilots at the helm of balloons
of every color combination and design imaginable.
The race course is somewhat unusual in that it is a double-loop course,
which participants run twice (except for brief stretches that occur
only in the second half of the race), meaning they will see much of the
course a total of four times during the course of the race. The finish
line is back at the park, located within view of the starting line.
