Details
The stark desert beauty of New Mexico's Sandia Mountains are on full
display at the annual late summer/early fall running of Albuquerque's
New Mexico Marathon, Half Marathon & 5K, which takes runners
along a course that winds slowly but steadily downhill through the city
and along the banks of the Rio Grande slowly but steadily from an
elevation of about 5,800 feet above sea level at the marathon start to
about 4,800 feet at the finish line, in the Old Town Plaza.
Open to both runners and walkers, the half maraton starts at the
mid-way point of the full marathon near the intersection of Interstate
25 and Highway 556, at an elevation of about 5,300 feet above sea
level. From there, the course for the half unfolds mostly downhill,
with a few quick uphills and downhills
along the way as runners make their way long 4th Street to the Alameda
Bike Path, and then over to the state park that hugs the banks of the
river as it winds its way southward through the city.
Participants also run past sights such as the Bosque Trail in
Albuquerque's North Valley, where its famed hot air balloons rise and
descend at Balloon Fiesta Park. From there, the fast and flat half
course winds southward,
past Rio Grande Valley State Park for most of the half marathon course,
toward the finish line near the historic Old Town Plaza, at Tiguex Park.
