Details
An autumn counterpart to the Jemez Mountain Trail Runs that take place
in the spring, Los Alamos's Pajarito Trail Runs Festival focuses less
on the longer distances and more on an enjoyable trail run through the
Pajarito Mountain and Canada Bonita trail areas, with a half-marathon
and 10K only. The 2007 running of the event was its inaugural run, and
organizers expect 2008 to attract even more runners to the field of
roughly 120 that came out for the first annual race.
Both the half marathon and 10K races follow the same loop trail that
starts and finishes at the Camp May lodge in the shadow of Pajarito
Mountain, and takes runners on a course of single-track trails and dirt
roads around the mountain. The half-marathon breaks off from the 10K
around the half-way point (of the half marathon) and continues on the
Guaje Canyon Trail for about 3.5 miles. At the end of this stretch,
runners reach the turnaround point and make their way back along the
course to the finish line back at the lodge.
Green, grassy meadows and forest lands thick with evergreen trees are
common sights runners find along the rocky dirt trails of this race,
which offers challenging climbs in elevation as well as plenty of
gently sloping hills to give you a rest along the way. The course is
also most definitely a high-altitude race -- the half marthon starts at
9,250 feet above sea level and reaches a peak of nearly 10,500 feet at
mile 3.5. From there, the course begins a long, sometimes steep
decline, but never drops below about 9,100 feet in elevation.
