Event Details

Runners enjoy a fast, flat race course -- as well as plenty of races to choose from, including a full marathon, a half marathon, a 5K and a marathon relay -- at the Rio Grande Marathon & Half Marathon, which unfolds on a course along the river in this city set in the shadow of the nearby Organ Mountains. Described by organizers as a small race (with just a few hundred participants), the Rio Grande event offers what novice runners especially love -- a fast, flat course that never changes more than about 10 feet in elevation throughout.

All of the Rio Grande races -- the half marathon and 5K are open to both runners and walkers -- start and finish just outside the football stadium at the Las Cruces Public Schools Sports Complex, where runners complete the race by crossing the finish line inside the stadium's track and field oval.

Once the course leaves the stadium, it takes runners through a combination of paved roads and riverside trails to the 6.55-mile turnaround point, where participants begin the trek back to the stadium for the finish.

Located near the state's southern border with Texas, just 40 miles from El Paso, the Las Cruces area tends to see mild to cool weather in October, when temperatures average between 78°F and 45°F for the month. With its dry climate, the city sees an average of less than an inch of rain on average for the month.
