Details
The rolling hills of rural and suburban southern New York State
welcomed nearly 900
runners combined for the four races at the 2007 running of the
Poughkeepsie Journal Dutchess County Classic Marathon & Half
Marathon, which also includes a 5K road race and a 1-mile Kids Run.
Described by past participants as a low-key race without lots of
spectators, the course that starts and finishes at the Robinson Lane
Recreation Park takes runners on a 13.1-mile loop through the
countryside (which the full marathon runners run twice).
With its mostly flat terrain with a few hills along the course, the
race reveals the changes that the area (which lies about 80 miles north
of New York City) has experienced over the past several years, as what
was once rural countryside has increasingly given way to suburban
neighborhood development. There are still plenty of pastoral views
along the course, though, as the race crosses creeks and runs past
Sprout Creek
Farm on Lauer Road.
The loop course finishes back at the starting line at the Recreation
Park, where by far you'll see the most spectator support -- in the 2007
race, more than 1,000 spectators were there to cheer on the finishers.
