Filled with long stretches along the shoreline of Onandaga Lake, which takes runners through a combination of lakeside parkland areas and residential neighborhood streets, Syracuse's all-new Empire State Marathon & Half Marathon makes its 3rd annual running in 2013, after its 2012 race saw more than 2,500 runners lace up for the full marathon, half marathon and relay races combined.
Designed to take advantage of this part of central New York state's fall season -- when the leaves turn brilliant shades of red, gold, brown and orange -- the half marathon race follows an out-and-back course that starts and finishes at Syracuse's NBT Bank Stadium, the home of the AAA-level Syracuse Chiefs minor league baseball team, an affiliate of the Washington Nationals major league team.
From there, the course heads northwest largely along the Onondaga Lake Parkway, the roadway that runs through Onondaga Lake County Park, which is sometimes called the "Central Park of Central New York" for its miles of paved trails, shaded pathways and approximately seven miles of trees and greenspace areas along the lakeshore. Runners follow the route as it winds through the park and then heads into Long Branch Park at the northwestern end of the lake.
Once there, the reach the half-way turnaround point on Cold Springs Trail near the river, and then retrace their steps all the way back -- along the parkway, through Long Branch Park and Onondaga Lake County Park -- all the way back to the baseball stadium, where the race finish line lies.

Weather & Climate
Located near the center of Upstate New York, about 90 miles east of Rochester and roughly 250 miles northwest of New York City, Syracuse typically experiences mild to occasionally cold weather in the early fall, with October temperatures that average between 40°F and 60°F.
On the day of the race (Oct. 20), the average low is 39°F and average high is 58°F, while rainfall totals average 3.2 inches for the month.
