Event Details

The tree-lined roads and historic beach town areas along the scenic southern shore of New York's Long Island are on display for runners at the annual autumn Hamptons Marathon & Half Marathon, which was named by Runner's World magazine as one of the country's "Top 10 Races to Run" for 2008. Filled with views of the beaches and the ocean as well as stretches through the Long Island towns of Springs, Amagansett and East Hampton, the race features a combination of long, flat stretches with occasional hills, along a course made up of paved surfaces throughout the race.

From the starting line at Springs School on School Street in East Hampton, the out-and-back course for the race takes runners first in a southeast direction along Old Stone Highway (Amagansett Springs Road), and then turns right onto Accabonac Road, running past the Green River Cemetery shortly after the turn. Runners follow this stretch for the next several miles as the course makes a loop around Accabonac, Town Lane and Stony Hill Road, before re-joining Accabonac just after runners pass the mile 7 marker.

Runners stay on Accabonac for a brief stretch before turning right onto Neck Path, for a stretch of the race that offers some of the course's most stunning natural beauty, with views of both Napeague Bay and the Long Island Sound as the course heads out to the turnaround point at the 11-mile marker on Louse Point Road, overlooking East Harbor. After this stretch, runners begin the final mile back in to the finish line at Springs School.

While they're in the area, participants and their friends and families can take in the sights of one of the country's most historic beach towns, where Jackson Pollock lived and painted many of his most famous works. Known today primarily as a playground for the rich and famous, especially for many of New York's wealthiest families, the Hamptons is home to the annual Artists & Writers Softball game, which has drawn the likes of John Mailer, Kurt Vonnegut, Paul Simon, Dustin Hoffman and others out to play in years past.
