More than 250 runners crossed the finish line at the 2012 running of Cortland's Leaf Peeper Half Marathon, a 13.1-mile race that's organized by the locally based Cortland County Family YMCA and takes runners on an out-and-back course that runs alongside the Tioughnioga River for most of the event.
Runners start the race at Cortland's Yaman Park, which lies on the city's northeastern edge, just off Highway 13 (Clinton Avenue). From there, the course takes runners around the edges of the lake in the center of the park and then out onto Kennedy Parkway, which leads northwest toward Clinton Avenue. Once runners meet up with Clinton, they make a right and head northeast along Clinton for the next mile and a half.
The residential neighborhood that runners make their way through just after leaving the park gives way pretty quickly to much more rural terrain, as runners pass by wide-open farm fields on their way to the next turn, a right onto Lorings Crossing Road. Here, runners cross over the Tioughnioga River and then turn left on East River Road (County Road 114), which they'll follow for the next four miles until they reach the turnaround point about half a mile after passing by Homer Crossing Road.
After making the turnaround, runners then retrace their steps in the opposite direction, heading south along East River Road along the banks of the river for the next few miles, all the way back to Yaman Park for the race finish line.

Located in central New York state, just over 30 miles south of Syracuse and about 215 miles northwest of New York City, Cortland typically sees October temperatures that average between 39°F and 59°F, while precipitation amounts average just under 3.2 inches for the month.
On the day of the race (Oct. 20), the average low is 38°F and the average high is 57°F.
