More than 500 runners come out to enjoy the fall weather each year for
the Marine Corps Reserves Half Marathon, a race run to benefit the
local Albany chapter of the Toys For Tots organization.
Starting at
Colonie Town Park in nearby Latham, N.Y., the race follows a course
with a number of downhill stretches -- albeit no corresponding uphill
stretches, thankfully -- along several miles of bicycle paths that take
runners from Latham to the finish line in Albany.
On race day,
participants are encouraged to bring a toy with them to donate to the
Marine Corps' "Toys for Tots" program.
The race is also part of the Mohawk-Hudson River Marathon, a full
26.2-mile marathon that is run on the same day but starts in nearby
Schenectady's Central Park. A favorite race for runners looking to
qualify for the Boston Marathon, the event takes participants along the
Mohawk and Hudson Rivers and past the historic city of Watervilet,
famous for its munitions arsenal and factory that has been in operation
since 1813. The marathon, like the half-marathon, finishes in downtown
Albany.
