Event
Details
Run past, alongside and through many of Brooklyn's most famous sights
and attractions at this New York borough's leg of the New York Road
Runners' Half-Marathon Grand Prix, which takes place each spring in
this part of the city, just south of the island of Manhattan. Fast and
largely flat (with the exception of some hilly terrain once the course
reaches Prospect Park), the race course is made up entirely of paved
city streets, starting at world-famous Coney Island (the site of the
annual July 4th hot-dog eating contest sponsored by Nathan's Famous Hot
Dogs), and takes runners all the way through the city to the
tree-filled oasis that is Prospect Park.
For the first 3 miles, the course takes the more than 5,000 runners who
compete in this event each year along Coney Island's famous boardwalk,
within shouting distance of the beach made famous in Neil Simon's
"Brighton Beach Memoirs." From there, the course turns from Surf Avenue
northward onto Ocean Parkway for the next several miles, until meeting
Prospect Parkway. The final 3 miles are run entirely inside the park,
as the course takes runners around the park's outer perimeter road,
over bridges and alongside the waters of Prospect Park Lake.
