North Carolina > Battle of the Triad Half Marathon & 5K
Kernersville, NC • Saturday, August 27, 2011
View the course map for the Battle of the Triad Half Marathon
Set for its second annual running in the late summer of 2011 along the streets of this small but growing town in what is known as the Piedmont Triad region of North Carolina -- named for the three nearby (and larger) cities of Winston-Salem, Greensboro and High Point -- the "Battle of the Triad" follows an out-and-back course for both its half marathon and 5K race.
Both races start and finish at the Kernersville Family YMCA on West Mountain Street, with a starting time of 7:00 AM for the half marathon and 7:15 AM for the 5K. For this year's race, the half marathon route will use the same streets and course layout as last year, but the route will be reversed -- so runners will run the first four miles of the race through the residential neighborhoods just west of the YMCA, and the final nine miles or so through downtown Kernersville.
Organizers note that while there are plenty of rolling hills all along the half marathon route, the changing of the direction of the course for 2011 means that runners will end the race with a gradual downhill descent over the last two miles, rather than the mile-long uphill stretch that served as the finish in 2010.
