Details
After a five-year absence from the Raleigh area, a marathon event
returns with the City of Oaks Marathon and Half Marathon, named to
highlight the city's distinctive and abundant oak trees as well as the
natural beauty that surround's the state's capital city. Both the half-
and full-marathons offer a hilly course with numerous changes in
elevation throughout the race.
The half begins and ends at roughly the
same elevation (450 feet above sea level), and experiences its most
significant hills between the starting line and mile 1, and between
miles 7 and 10. The course for half features a long downhill, with a
few small rises thrown in, between miles 2 and 5.
The half- and full-marathon runners run the same course through the
first 13.1 miles of the race, and are treated to scenic views of
Raleigh's Meredith College and North Carolina State University, as well
as downtown areas along Glenwood South, Clark Avenue and Fayetteville
Street. A loop course that starts and finishes at Carter Finley
Stadium, near the state fairgrounds, the half marathon is run entirely
along paved city streets, while the second 13.1 miles take full
marathon participants along a wide gravel trail through Umstead State
Park.
