North Carolina > Heart & Sole Half Marathon & 5K
Goldsboro, NC • Saturday, February 1, 2014 • Course Map
With a course that takes runners along tree-lined neighborhood streets and alongside the fairways of the golf course in the middle of this planned residential community known as the Village of Walnut Creek here in eastern North Carolina, the Heart & Sole Half Marathon & 5K makes its 4th annual running in February 2014.
Marked by its towering pine trees and the beauty of its oaks and dogwoods, Walnut Creek lies just a short drive southeast of downtown Goldsboro, a small city on eastern North Carolina's coastal plain region that's perhaps best known as the home of the state's Seymour Johnson air force base.
Runners taking part in this race follow a winding, out-and-back course that makes its way around Walnut Creek as well as Lake Wackena and Spring Lake, both of which lie inside the community. Gently rolling hills are to be found throughout the race's 13.1 miles, with the steepest hills occurring between mile markers 7 and 10, as runners make their way along Lake Wackena Road and the loop around Stratford Road.
After making their way down the southwestern shoreline of Lake Wackena, runners then head back along Lakeshore Drive and Mill Road to the parking lot on the southeastern side of the lake, where the start/finish line lies.
