North Carolina > Owl's Roost Rumble Trail Half Marathon & 3.5-Mile Race
Greensboro, NC

Date

Saturday, April 25, 2009

Event Details

More than 430 runners laced up and took to the trails that surround Greensboro's Lake Brandt at the spring 2009 running of the Owl's Roost Rumble Trail Half Marathon & 3.5-Mile Run, which takes runners over a course that's mostly natural-surface dirt trails around the lake, filled with tree roots, rocks and fallen branches as well as plenty of switchbacks and hills to keep you on your toes throughout the race's 13.1 miles.

The course for the out-and-back trail half marathon starts at Lake Brandt's Bur Mil Park, on Owl's Roost Road. From there, runners follow paved surfaces for the first half-mile of the race and then head out onto the Owl's Roost Trail, which is just over 4 miles of single-track mountain bike trails that wind along the edges of the lakeshore, through the thickly forested areas that surround the water. After crossing a bridge over the lake, runners then get a quick breather with the paved Greenway Trail before hitting natural surface trails once again, on the Nat Greene Trail.

This stretch of the trail also includes plenty of small uphills and downhills as well as plenty of rocks, roots and switchbacks, and unfolds along roughly a three-mile stretch through the woods before putting runners out onto Lake Brandt Road near the marina, where one of the course's two water stations will be available. Once runners pass through this section of the race, they hit the Piedmont Trail, another three-mile stretch of trail that is thankfully the race's flattest stretch.

Following the Piedmont Trail, runners hit a double-track fire road in the forest and then hit the Big Loop Trail, a one-mile stretch that finishes on an uphill into the finish line back near the park. As noted above, the race's organizers station only two water stops along the half marathon trail route, so runners are encouraged to bring their own portable water bottles with them during the race.
