Event Details

More than 1,800 runners crossed the finish line both races combined at the spring 2009 running of the Bank of America Raleigh Rocks Half Marathon & 5K, which also included both a one-mile fun run and a 100-yard dash for kids ages 9 and under, along the streets of downtown Raleigh and through the campuses of nearby Meredith College and North Carolina State University.

The race's 2009 running also featured a new starting line downtown, near the intersection of Davie and Wilmington Streets. From there, runners followed a loop through downtown for the first mile, along Wilmington up to Edenton, and then over to the turn onto Harrington Street, followed by turns on Davie and Lenior and then a northward stretch back up to Edenton Street. After the first roughly two and a half miles of the race, which are mostly flat, runners then hit the course's first long straightaway stretch, onto Hillsborough Street.

This next stretch of the race takes runners three miles westward along Hillsborough, and features the race's first big uphill, a long, steady ascent that passes by North Carolina State on its way to the intersection with Blue Ridge Road, where runners hit the half-way point in the race and begin the loop that turns them around for the second half of the race and heads back toward the finish. The last big hill of the race takes runners over the pedestrian bridge that crosses over Interstate 440, after which the field makes its way along the edge of the Meredith College campus, heading back towards Hillsborough Street.

All along the race route, which is paved thorughout and gives runners the chance to enjoy a long, steady downhill stretch along Hillsborough on the way back into downtown, the event organizers stage bands playing music for runners and spectators, spaced out along the course and at the start/finish line.

Like its counterpart race that takes place in February (the Crystal Coast Half Marathon), the Raleigh Rocks Half is part of a series of 13.1-mile races whose proceeds go to benefit the United Way of Coastal Carolina and make up the Blue Cross & Blue Shield of North Carolina Half Marathon Series, which also includes the the First Carolina State Bank Half Marathon in late November.

Race Weather & Climate

In March, the city's average monthly temperatures range between 61°F and 40°F, while rainfall amounts average just over 4.4 inches for the month.
