Event Details

The big, broad shoulders of the Missouri River are your constant companion as you run alongisde the riverbank in North Dakota's Bismarck Marathon & Half Marathon, which runs a mostly north-south direction through Bismarck, the state's capital city and second most-populous city (after Fargo), located in North Dakota's far southwestern corner. Fast, flat and quite scenic -- with plenty of trees, bridge crossings and nature pathways -- the event offers several races for runners, including the full- and half-marathons, a marathon relay (for teams of five), a 5K Run/Walk and a kids' fun run.

The half marathon course begins at Pioneer Park, which lies in the city's northwestern section near the river at the intersection of River Road and Burnt Boat Drive. The course follows River Road southward for several miles, crossing both Memorial Highway (Hwy. 94) and the West River Expressway (Hwy. 810), before reaching the turnaround point on West Burleigh Avenue, immediately after Crossing Creek.

After the turnaround, participants run the same course they've just run in reverse, heading back up along the Missouri to Pioneer Park for the finish. The trail runners follow throughout the race includes parts of the Lewis & Clark Trail, and thanks to the fact that it's "extremely fast," (in the words of the race organizers), many competitors will have the chance to set personal records at the Roughrider.

Be sure to sign up early for this race -- formerly known as the North Dakota Roughrider Marathon & Half Marathon -- as the number of spaces is limited and the race often sells out early in advance of its actual running.
