North Dakota > Kroll's Diner Bismarck Marathon, Half Marathon, Relay & 5K
Bismarck, ND  •  Saturday, September 21, 2013  •  Course Map

Just over 1,100 runners, walkers and relay team participants crossed the finish line at Bismarck's Cottonwood Park in all races combined at the 2012 running of the Kroll's Diner Bismarck Marathon, which follows an out-and-back course that runners in the half marathon run once and those running the full marathon run twice, between the park and the nearby campus of the University of Mary.

All races start near the baseball fields at Cottonwood Park, which lies just off 12th Street and south of Tacoma Avenue near the Bismarck Municipal Airport. From there, the course features lots of mostly fast, flat and scenic terrain, along a combination of paved roads and paved biking, walking and running trails, and a pair of bridge crossings over Apple Creek with views of the Missouri River in the distance.

Runners start the half marathon at the park in the same spot as those running the full marathon and those in the 5K, just south of the baseball fields. From there, the course heads first north through the park around the edges of the ballfields on the bike paths for the first mile and a half of the course, and then out onto the paved roads on Tacoma Avenue and then the turn right onto University Drive, which runners will follow south for the next few miles all the way down to the University of Mary.

The university campus serves as the race turnaround point, as runners will make their way counter-clockwise all the way around the edges of campus, and then turn back onto University Drive for the northward trek back toward Cottonwood Park. The stretch between mile markers 5 and 6 features the race's steepest hill -- followed by an equally steep downhill on the return route -- that rises some 200 feet in elevation between the two mile markers. After that, the rest of the course is very flat back in to the finish line.

Runners in both the full and the half marathons will have 6 1/2 hours to complete the race, and the race also offers a marathon relay for the 26.2-mile race, for 5-person teams. Runners looking to qualify for the Boston Marathon are frequent entrants in this race, as the course is USATF (USA Track & Field) certified as a qualifying course.
