Event Details

A record field of more than 5,800 participants crossed the finish line at the spring 2009 running of Columbus's Capital City Half Marathon & Commit To Be Fit 5K, both of which races took participants on a tour of this, the largest city in Ohio. From the starting line at the Lifestyle Communities Pavilion on Neil Avenue, the 13.1-mile loop route for the out-and-back race of the city's downtown streets and along parts of its riverfront areas, as the heart of the city lies right at the confluence of the Olentangy and Scioto Rivers.

The Capital City race is truly an open race, as organizers welcome runners, walkers and wheelchair competitors to the four-hour race, which starts promptly at 8:00 AM for those participating in the half-marathon and 8:15 AM for those running the 5K. The race has drawn notable, world-famous runners in past years, including Clint Verran and Daniel Cheruiyot, who famously won the event's 2007 half marathon race together when they finished in a tie.

Largely fast and flat and without any serious rises or declines in elevation throughout the course, the Capital City Half Marathon has enjoyed a significant degree of success as an event in a relatively short time period -- especially considering its inaugural running took place just in 2004. Part of its popularity, no doubt, is due to the scenery along the race course, including the campus of Ohio State University and historic areas of downtown Columbus like Short North, Victorian Village and German Village.
