Details
Runners will find ever-present reminders of the musical theme of this
year's Rite Aid Cleveland Marathon, Half Marathon & 10K
throughout the race, as participants get a chance to run past the
city's historic Rock and Roll Hall of Fame & Museum, receive a
medal at the finish line with an electric guitar that spins, and can
take part in the "26.3 Mile Rock Party" at the finish line after the
race, where organizers will have live music entertainment, prizes and
more.
One of the 50 oldest marathon road races in the country, the Cleveland
race is also one of the Midwest region's oldest races, and will
celebrate its 32nd annual running in 2009. It's easy to see why it's
such a popular race -- the 2008 race drew more than 9,000 runners and
walkers for all three races combined -- when you get a look at the
elevation profile for the course, which is marked by long, steady
stretches of flat terrain, and an overall elevation change of just
under 150 feet.
The 13.1-mile half marathon course shares the same starting line and
time as the full marathon, with the race for both starting at 7:00 AM
in downtown Cleveland, at the corner of St. Clair Avenue and East 13th
Street. From there, the course takes both runners and walkers -- both
the half and full marathons welcome both running and walking
participants -- through downtown Cleveland and along the shores of Lake
Erie, especially in the middle part of the race along Edgewater Park.
Along the way, participants will be able to catch views of many of the
city's most well-known attractions and sights, including Browns Stadium
(home of the NFL's Cleveland Browns), the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame
and Jacobs Field, where the city's age-old Major League Baseball team
the Cleveland Indians play. While the course is mostly flat and steady,
it does feature a few hills here and there, most notably at the second
mile marker and its highest point at the 11th mile.
Those running the half-marathon split off from their 26.2-mile
counterparts after running a long "home stretch" straightaway along
Carnegie Avenue, turning left a few blocks after Jacobs Field onto East
18th Street, and run the last mile of the race along Prospect, East
17th Street and St. Clair to the finish line.
