Event Details

Just under 300 runners, walkers and relay participants came out for the 36th annual running of the Cleveland Spring Classic Half Marathon & 5K, the first of two events that are run along exactly the same course in Strongsville, a community that lies just outside the Cleveland metropolitan area. Both races take runners along the winding trail that skirts the Rocky River through the Mill Stream Run Reservation, which follows a northwest-to-southwest orientation and is part of a system of local urban parks and greenspace areas known as the Cleveland Metroparks.

The Spring Classic course (the counterpart to the event is run in the fall) is a double-loop course that starts and finishes at the part of the park known as the Bonnie Park picnic area, which is reached from nearby Interstate 71 via the Pearl Road exit. From the start near the intersection of Albion Road and Cleveland Metropark Drive, runners take off at the 9:00 AM starting time and follow the paved-surface route through Mill Stream Run, running for much of the course along the banks of the Rocky River that winds through the park.

As with the fall classic half marathon, once runners reach the intersection with Royalton Road -- also Highway 82 -- they've also reached the first turnaround point of the half-marathon. By this point they've only completed a quarter of the race, however, as they'll then run back to the starting line and then back again along Cleveland Metropark Drive to get in the 13.1 miles for the half.

Runners in both the spring and fall half marathon events are limited to three hours, meaning that participants in all three events -- the half-marathon, half-marathon relay and the 5K -- must finish by 12 noon. Every finisher receives an event-issued long-sleeve hi-tech t-shirt and plenty of food at the finish line ceremony.

Race Weather & Climate

Generally cool but sometimes still quite cold conditions are the norm in the springtime in the Strongsville area, which lies about 15 miles southwest of nearby Cleveland. In April, average monthly temperatures range between 57°F and 38°F, while rainfall amounts average around 3.37 inches for the month.
