Ohio > Leave No Trace Trail Half Marathon

"Prepare to leave dirty." That's the advice that the organizers of Peninsula's Leave No Trace Trail Half Marathon have for the runners who'll head into the winding single-track trails of northeastern Ohio's Cuyahoga Valley National Park, for a race that makes its 4th annual running as summer is transitioning to fall in late August 2013.
A smaller-sized race -- the event saw 179 runners cross the finish line at its 2012 running -- the Leave No Trace race follows an out-and-back route that starts and finishes at Camp Manatoc, a Boy Scouts of America camp that's located in the heart of this 51-square-mile national park that takes its name from the river that flows through the middle of its forests and trails, the Cuyahoga River (which means "crooked river").
Runners will start the race at 7:00 AM at the camp, which lies just off Truxell Road and just south of the nearby village of Peninsula. From there, the course will feature a number of technical trails -- which are otherwise used as mountain biking trails -- and plenty of uphill climbs and downhill descents. Depending on the weather in the days leading up to the race, potentially there could be plenty of muddy and wet spots on the trails.
Registration won't be available on the day of the race, and all entrants will receive either a men's or women's long-sleeve race t-shirt. Runners are encouraged to sign up early for the race, as past races have been limited to 250 entrants.

Nestled in the middle of Cuyahoga Valley National Park in northeastern Ohio, roughly 25 miles south of Cleveland, Peninsula typically sees September temperatures that average between 63°F and 82°F, while rainfall totals average just over 3.3 inches for the month (making September the village's wettest month of the year).
On the day of the race (Aug. 31), the average low is 60°F and the average high is 79°F.
