Event Details

Named in honor of the historic lighthouse that stands guard over this city on the shores of Lake Erie, near the mouth of the Huron River, the Huron Chamber of Commerce Lighthouse Half Marathon & 5K will celebrate an important milestone at its spring 2008 running, when it commemorates the 10th anniversary of this road race that takes runners on a winding course through the streets of Huron and along the lakeshore.

Described by race organizers as "fun, flat and fast," the Huron Lighthouse race begins for both half-marathoners and 5K runners at the campus of Huron High School, with the starting line at the football-track and field stadium. From there, participants follow the 13.1-mile route through the city and get a close-up view of the lake for a stretch of the race. The out-and-back course is run almost entirely on paved surfaces, as the last mile of the race takes runners across an unpaved trail.

Runners and walkers alike are welcome to take part in either the half marathon or the 5K, which start at 8:00 AM and 8:15 AM, respectively. To honor the local participants who've helped bring the race its decade of success to date, race organizers will award prizes to the fastest local man and woman as well as the fastest man and woman from Erie County. The race's proceeds will go to provide scholarships for graduating members of the Huron High School track team.

On a quick note of history, you'll have to peer out into the Huron Harbor to see it but make sure to take a look at the Huron Lighthouse while you're in town. The original lighthouse, built in 1835, was a wooden structure erected to aid in navigating ships to what was then becoming an increasingly important port on Lake Erie. Though it was destroyed by a storm in 1854 and rebuilt a few years later, the lighthouse you can see today was built in 1936 at the end of the breakwater in the harbor, about one mile away from the shore.

Today, though it is used most frequently by locals as a fishing pier, it still serves as a functioning lighthouse. It's also in the process of transformation, as it will become part of a 64-acre island that will be a town park, built by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
