Event Details

Several hundred runners came out to run last year's ninth annual running of this fast and largely flat half marathon that takes runners from the town of Berea along a course that skirts Ohio's Rocky River all the way to the town that shares the same name (Rocky River). Named the Cleveland Clinic Sports Health River Run Half Marathon & Relay, this road race also includes a non-competitve kids fun run, a 5K Run/Walk and a 12.1-mile race for inline skaters.

A point-to-point race that is largely a long and very gradual descent from an elevation of about 774 feet above sea level at the start to about 604 feet above sea level at the finish, the race starts at Berea's Wallace Lake, where it begins the long and winding course along the river northward all the way to the finish at Memorial Fields in Rocky River's stretch of the Cleveland Metroparks area. The race is run on a combination of paved surfaces and improved trails along the river -- which are used for biking, hiking, walking, running, skating and horseback riding, among other uses -- and finishes on a paved surface near Memorial's baseball fields.

Both runners and walkers are welcome for the half-marathon as well as the half-marathon relay, which splits the race into a 5.8-mile segment for the first runner in the relay and a 7.3-mile segment for the second. The half marathon starts for runners at 8:00 AM and for walkers at 7:00 AM, and the course will remain open until about 11:00 AM.

For families who'd like to bring out their kids to participate in the kids' fun run -- which includes distances of 50 yards, 100 yards, a quarter mile and a half mile for children of different ages -- that event takes place the day before the half marathon, on Saturday at 8:15 AM. The 5K Run/Walk also takes place on Saturday, at 8:30 AM.

Race Weather & Climate

Located near the shores of Lake Erie in northeastern Ohio, just a few miles from nearby Cleveland, the town of Berea typically sees mild to moderately cool and sometimes cold weather in the early fall (thanks to the lake effect), with relatively even precipitation throughout the year. In September, average temperatures range between 72°F and 54°F, with an average of about 3.77 inches of rainfall for the month.

Fees

$35 for the half marathon, if registered by August 7, 2009 ($50 for long-sleeve t-shirt)
$40 between Aug. 8 - September 9 ($55 for long sleeve t-shirt)
$55 between Sept. 10 - 12 ($70 for long sleeve t-shirt)
