Event Details

Known around the world for its famed Soap Box Derby world championship races every summer, the Ohio city of Akron hosts the 9th annual running of its Road Runner Akron Marathon, Half Marathon & Relay races in the fall of 2009, of which the 13.1-mile race is the newest addition, having been added to this annual early autumn race event for the first time in 2007.

Both the half and the full marathon share the same starting line and time and follow the same route for most of the first half of the full marathon, which starts on South Broadway Street and takes runners first northward along Broadway and then onto Main Street for the first mile of the race, which turns around near St. Thomas Hospital. After making turns on both York Street, Schiller Avenue and Olive Street, runners then converge once again with Main Street and head south back toward the starting area for the next stretch of the race.

The first three miles of the half marathon feature perhaps its steepest uphill and downhill stretches, as runners continue making their way southward along High Street past the campus of the University of Akron, and join South Main Street for the stretch down to the turn onto Wilbeth Road. These roads (like nearly all of the half marathon course) are run on paved streets through Akron's downtown areas and tree-lined residential neighborhoods, and past local landmarks like the stadium for the Akron Aeros, the double-A minor league affiliate of the Cleveland Indians baseball team.

After making their way southward to Wilbeth Road, runners turn left and head eastward toward Firestone Park, and run all the way around the western edge of the park along Firestone Boulevard until they meet up with Brown Street, where they turn left and head northward for roughly the next two miles all the way up to the University of Akron, where they run along Sumner Street and University Avenue to meet up again with Broadway, followed by a few twists and turns and a brief stretch along the canal toward the finish line at the Canal Park Stadium, the home of the Aeros.

Race Weather & Climate

Located in northeastern Ohio, roughly 40 miles south of Cleveland, the city of Akron typically experiences mild to moderately warm weather conditions in the early fall season, and slightly wetter weather in the summer and early fall than in the winter season. In September, the city's average monthly temperatures range between 74°F and 56°F, while rainfall amounts average just under 3.6 inches for the month.
