Details
This northern Ohio race, which takes runners on a rural course through
the countryside and wetland areas outside Elyria, Ohio, just a few
miles south of the shores
of Lake Erie, celebrated just its third annual running in the spring of
2008. Named for the wildlife and wetland preserve through which runners
travel for part of the course, the Sandy Ridge Half Marathon
& 10K saw a field of just over 120 runners cross the finish
line for both races combined this year.
From the starting line at Lorain County Community College, the race
takes participants on a looping, mostly counter-clockwise course
through the rural areas just north of Elyria. After leaving the campus,
runners enter the Sandy Ridge Reservation within the first few miles,
crossing into the area's 310-acre preserve of forest, meadow and
marshes. Runners will run through both the thickly wooded forest areas
as well as open meadows and around the wetlands, where they'll likely
spot one of the more than 100 species of bird that make the preserve
their home.
After running around Sandy Ridge and exiting the preserve onto Barres
Road, participants will then follow Barres, Stoney Ridge Road and Long
Road on the next few miles northward, until hitting Detroit Road, where
they begin the turn back south that will take them back toward the
finish at Lorain Community College. Those thinking of running the race
next spring should expect a fast and flat course with little change in
elevation or hills to speak of.
