The hilly, forested trails that wind their way around Caesar Creek Lake will be showing off their peak fall colors when runners make their way through the park for the fourth annual running of the White Tail Trail Half Marathon on the first weekend of October 2013, after a 2012 race that saw just over 280 runners cross the finish line.
Runners follow a point-to-point course for the race that winds through the Caesar Creek Wilderness Area, which is part of the more than 7,000-acre Caesar Creek State Park and Caesar Creek Lake Wildlife Area, all of which lie just a few minutes' drive southeast from Waynesville, a small southwestern Ohio town within an hour's drive of Cincinnati.
As it is a point-to-point race, the starting line lies at the park's Fifty Springs Recreation Area, near the lake's southwestern end. Before the start, runners will check in at the finish line at the park's Swim Beach, where they'll board shuttle buses that will take them to the starting line at Fifty Springs.
Once the race begins and they head out from the starting line area into the forests, the beauty of this remote area comes alive, past runners say. The course winds all the way around the southernmost end of the lake and then brings runners around its northern shore, keeping runners close to the shoreline for most of the course. At about the mile 5 marker, runners will cross a stream, which may be very low or as high as ankle deep, depending on the weather and the precipitation in the days leading up to the race.
All the way around, the trails will consist of either grass or dirt single- and double-track trails through the woods, which will be turning many different shades of red, gold and orange as runners head along the hills -- there's an overall elevation change of about 290 feet over the course of the race. Organizers plan to post six aid stations with water and refreshments out along the race route, and there will also be three stations with restrooms, they add.
Age group awards will be presented to the top 3 finishers in each of the following age divisions: 19 and under, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69, and age 70 and over. The scheduled starting time for the race is 9:00 AM, and the course time limit for the race is 4 hours.
