Oklahoma > Andy Payne Memorial Marathon & Half Marathon
Oklahoma City, OK • Sunday, May 27, 2012 • Course Map
Organized as a new road race event for the Oklahoma City area just two years ago, the third annual running of the Andy Payne Memorial Races -- which includes a 10K and a 5K race on Saturday and a full marathon and half marathon race on Sunday -- will be run in 2012 in memory of Oklahoma's own Andy Hartley Payne, the famed runner who won the 1928 Transcontinental Footrace, which stretched more than 3,400 miles all the way from Los Angeles to New York.
Payne, who grew up just outside Tulsa in the town of Claremore and was a member of the Cherokee tribe, later used his prize winnings to help pay off the mortgage on his family's farm. The race also helped bring attention to Route 66, as much of the race took runners along this now-famous highway, and encourage travel and tourism into the heartland of the country.
Like the 5K, 10K and full marathon races, the half marathon featured a new course in 2011, trading the previous year's route around Lake Overholser for the new route that winds around Lake Hefner. From the starting line at Stars & Stripes Park on the southern end of the lake, runners make what is basically a big horseshoe-shaped loop around the eastern, northern and western edges of the lake, along a combination of the lakeside trails and Lake Hefner Drive, which runners follow all the way around to the turnaround point just south of Lakeshore Park.
Once they hit the turnaround, the course then takes them in reverse along the route they've just run, all the way back to the finish line where they started, in Stars & Stripes Park. Both the full and the half marathons will start at 6:30 AM on Sunday.
