Details
Postponed in 2007 due to renovations taking place on the River Parks
course through the city, on which the race is run, the Oklahoma
Marathon & Half Marathon returns in November 2008 to an all-new
course along the park, which follows along the banks of the Arkansas
River through town. The race, which celebrates its 10th annual running
in 2008, was originally begun as a vehicle to allow world-record
marathoner Rick Worley accomplish his goal of running 50 marathons in
50 states all in the same calendar year.
Then called the Oklahoma Invitational, the race has since become a
fundraiser for the Boys and Girls Club and the local Cal Farley's Boys
Ranch, Cal Farley Family Program and Cal Farley Girlstown, home to more
than 300 local children. Today, the race draws alumni, current students
and representatives of the schools as participants, as well as runners
from around the U.S.
An out-and-back course that unfolds along 6.55 miles of Tulsa's River
Parks system, starting at the 68th Street parking area and reaching its
turnaround point at the 11th Street bridge, runs along asphalt park
pathways for the entire length of the course. Fast and flat, the course
also features little change in elevation, rising and falling no more
than about 30 feet in elevation throughout the race.
