Event Details

More than 2,600 participants crossed the finish line in the 26.2- and 13.1-mile races alone at the fall 2008 running of Tulsa's Marathon, Half Marathon, Relay, 5K & 1-Mile Fun Run, which welcomes both runners and walkers for a scenic tour of the city's downtown as well as its riverside parks, which parallel the Arkansas River that flows through the city. More than 1,600 runners and walkers finished the half marathon alone in 2008, making the Route 66 race one of the nation's more well-attended half-marathon events.

Fast and mostly flat, and run entirely on paved surfaces through Tulsa's city streets and along portions of its River Parks pathways along the Arkansas River, this loop race starts and finishes at Veterans Park downtown. Runners next cross the river twice, out over the 23rd Street bridge and back over again on the Southwest Boulebard bridge that parallels Interstate 244, after which they make a short loop around the Tulsa Regional Medical Center and then head south along Riverside Drive.

The half-marathon route reaches its turnaround point on Riverside Drive just past the Riverside Path, where they begin their final stretch back toward the finish at Veterans Park. Runners can expect to encounter some hills on the course, particularly in the early going between mile markers 1 and 3 and then again between miles 8 and 10. The final stretch of the race into the finish is thankfully mostly flat, with a final brief uphill near the finish.

Runners or walkers who don't feel up to running either the full or half marathons are encouraged to sign up for the full marathon relay, which features five-person teams, or the 5K or one-mile "fun run." Organizers note that the Route 66 Quarter Marathon, which had been run on the same day as the rest of the race events in the past, has been moved to August 1, 2009.

Weather conditions in the Tulsa area tend to be mild to cold in the early weeks of fall, as monthly temperatures average between 60°F and 39°F in November.
