Event Details

Nearly 400 runners crossed the finish line at the 2008 running of the Cascade Half Marathon, which marks its 11th annual running in January 2010 along the flat country roads in this Willamette Valley community that lies just a few miles to the southeast of Salem. An out-and-back race run entirely on paved rural roads through the farmland areas between Turner and Aumsville, the event is open to runners and walkers, and also includes a 10K and a two-mile fun run.

From the starting line at Cascade Junior High School on Marion Drive, the race follows a somewhat zig-zag route, taking runners briefly down Marion and then turning onto 70th Avenue, running northward until the course hits Little Road, where runners turn right and head east as the road turns left, then right, and then right again. As runners head along Little as it turns into Porter Street, the course continues with quick turns until it reaches Bishop Road, where the field turns north and takes Bishop all the way to the half-way point of the 13.1-mile course, and turn around and head back in reverse along the exact course they've just run.

Though it's run along a course that's mostly fast and flat, past runners have noted that it can still be a difficult race to run, given the often very cold weather and occasional foggy and rainy conditions that pop up in some years. All three races in the event start at 9:30 AM, but organizers permit runners who think they'll run with slower finishing times (more than 2 1/2 hours) to start their race at 8:30 AM.

Race Weather & Climate

Located just a short drive from downtown Salem, Oregon, in the state's northwestern corner, the town of Turner typically sees cold weather conditions in the winter, as January monthly temperatures average between 47°F and 33°F. Runners also should be prepared also for rain or snow, as area precipiation averages nearly 6 inches in January.
