Event Details

Open to both runners and walkers, Oregon's Champoeg Half Marathon & 5-Mile Run takes participants on a hilly route in and around the Champoeg State Heritage Area, a 615-acre park filled with forests, open fields and wetlands that features a recreation of the 1860s settlement that once thrived here along the banks of the Willamette River. The race route takes runners along a number of park roads and paths that wind through the park, as well as country roads that lie just outside the park's boundaries.

Runners start the race at the Champoeg (pronounced "sham-poo-ee") Oak Grove Day Use area near the center of the park, and follow a course that takes them northward away from the parking lot toward the Willamette River in the race's early going. From there, the race winds up and down a number of hills through the park, showing off its hiking and nature trails as well as the historic preservation efforts along the river, where runners will catch glimpses of the cabins, monuments and farmland the way it existed more than a century ago.

The race follows an out-and-back course through the park that brings runners and walkers back to the starting line for the race finish, and starts walkers off one hour before the runners' starting time of 9:00 AM. Just over 150 runners crossed the finish line in the half marathon at the race's 2008 running, with an additional 16 runners participating in the five-mile run.
