Oregon > Cinco de Mayo Half Marathon, 5K & 10K Run/Walk
Portland, OR  •  Sunday, May 5, 2013  •  Course Map

Part of a series of half marathon, 10K and 5K running events organized throughout the year by the locally-based Terrapin Events, the late springtime Cinco de Mayo Half Marathon takes place on the actual 5th of May in 2013, and brings nearly 2,000 runners and walkers out onto the streets of Portland for a race that combines mostly flat terrain with one (gradual) big hill in the middle of the course.

The course for the Cinco de Mayo Half Marathon follows a route similar to the one used at October's Run Like Hell Half Marathon -- an out-and-back course that takes runners from the starting line near downtown Portland's World Trade Center, on Broadway between Washington and Alder Streets.

From there, runners next make their way through the city's Pearl and Old Town Districts, where they take in scenic views of the Willamette River that flows through the city, as well as Tom McCall Waterfront Park on their way northward and westward along the Naito Parkway. Once runners have made the turns at the northernmost point of the course, they head back onto Naito Parkway and start running south back toward the starting line area.

After starting off with mostly flat terrain for the first five miles, the course then begins a three-mile gradual uphill that takes runners southward along Naito Parkway and Barbur Boulevard. By the time participants reach the eighth mile marker, the course again flattens out as it follows along the western edge of Portland's George Hines Park, taking runners along the winding Terwilliger Boulevard northward through the city.

The course continues its wind along the edge of the parks, passing by Terwilliger Park and through Duniway Park, for the home stretch of the race, which is a slight downhill slope toward the finish line back at the starting line near the World Trade Center. While the 10K and 5K races are open to both runners and walkers, the half marathon is designed for runners only, as there will be a 3 1/2 hour time limit for those running the half marathon.

More than 1,800 runners, walkers and kids' race participants crossed the finish line in all races combined in 2012, including just over 350 runners and walkers in the half marathon alone.

Race Weather & Climate

Located in the northwest corner of the state, Portland typically sees mild to moderately warm weather in May, when the city's average monthly temperatures range between 67°F and 49°F.

On the day of the race (May 5), the average high is 65°F and the average low is 47°F, while rainfall totals average just under 2.5 inches for the month, as spring here brings generally much drier weather than the winter months.
