Event Details

Runners get a chance to trek through Oregon's "Emerald City" at the annual Eugene Marathon, Half Marathon & 5K, which takes participants through, around and past several of the city's urban parks, the campus of the University of Oregon and across the Willamette River, which winds its way through the heart of the city. Open to both runners and walkers, the race also includes a kids marathon, in which children who've completed 25.2 miles over the weeks leading up to the race will get to run the final mile of their marathon in downtown Eugene.

From the starting line at historic Hayward Field on the edge of the University of Oregon campus, the 13.1-mile half marathon starts out taking runners on a U-shaped loop along 15th Avenue and Fairmount Boulevard before turning onto a long straightaway stretch for several blocks along 19th Avenue. Runners follow 19th all the way until they nearly reach Pearl Street, and turn onto the path along the creek that leads into the city's Amazon Park, whose 90 acres feature running and walking trails along Amazon Creek as well as softball fields, open greenspace and restored wetland areas.

The race route follows the creek all the way south through the park, and exits onto West Amazon Drive, which takes runners all the way southward to the race's second park, Kinney Frank Park. The route curves all the way around the southern end of the park and turns back northward onto East Amazon, which runners follow for a second long straightaway until they meet up with Hilyard Street, which takes them up to East 24th Avenue.

After turning east on East 24th, runners follow the street until the turn onto Agate Street, which takes them northward toward the river and Alton Baker Park. By the time they reach the park -- after crossing the bridge just off Riverfront Parkway -- runners are entering the last third of the race, and perhaps its most scenic section, as the beauty of the park's roughly 400 acres are on display, with plenty of ponds, big green lawns and walking and running trails. Runners follow the roads through the park and cross a second bridge just before the interstate, crossing over into Franklin Park on the southern bank of the Willamette River.

The finish for the out-and-back race leads runners back to the place where they started, near Haywood Field at the Oregon campus for the finish line race festivities. Overall, much of the course is largely fast and flat, and first-time runners can expect a good-sized field -- the 2009 running saw more than 5,200 cross the finish line in all races combined, with more than 3,000 of those running the half-marathon alone.
