Event Details

Trail runners get a chance to run among the narrow, winding trails and tall, old growth trees of Oregon's Shevlin Regional Park at the annual Haulin' Aspen Trail Marathon & Half Marathon, which welcomed more than 460 runners for its fourth annual running in the summer of 2008. Along the way, runners traverse challenging single-track trails and jeep roads as well as open valleys and a brief stretch of paved roads on their out-and-back route through the 650-acre park, where they start and finish the race at Aspen Meadows at the park's northern end.

From the starting line at Aspen Meadows, the half-marathon route winds southward along the eastern edge of the park closest to Bend, which lies just three miles away. Runners follow the winding trails through the park to the crossing over Tumalo Creek, where they turn and head northward across the creek onto Tumalo Creek Road and then Jack Pine Spring Road. This loop of the course takes runners to just past the half-way point and then turns back toward Shevlin Park, heading through the forest while giving runners ample views of nearby Mount Bachelor and Tumalo Mountain.

Once around the loop, the course crosses the creek a second time and takes runners back northward through the park, roughly parallel to Jack Pine Spring Road. All the while, Tumalo Creek is on runners' right side, following them back up toward the finish line, with abundant aspens, ponderosas and pine trees along the way. The route also takes runners through a covered bridge as well as a half log over the creek at one point, and runners can expect to experience about 1,300 feet in elevation gain over the course of the race.

As they head toward the finish line, the home stretch of the half marathon (as well as the full) is thankfully mostly flat, pine-needle covered terrain along the creek, and runners can cool themselves off and clean off their trail shoes in the creek at the finish. The full marathon starts at 7:00 AM, followed by the half marathon start at 8:30 AM.
