Oregon > Highway to Well Half Marathon, 10K, 5K & 1-Mile
Pendleton, OR • Saturday, August 24, 2013 • Course Map
A long, point-to-point course that takes runners from the nearby town of Pilot Rock all the way north to Pendleton's Community Park awaits at Oregon's Highway to Well races, which feature a half marathon, 5K, 10K and a one-mile run and make their 5th annual running in the late summer of 2013, after a 2012 race that saw 107 runners and walkers cross the finish line in all races combined.
Sponsored and organized by the locally-based Umatilla County Wellness Committee as a way to promote the value of fitness and living a healthy lifestyle to local residents, the race -- whose logo is a playful spin on the famed rock band AC/DC's "Highway to Hell" song -- takes runners along what is known as the "Old Highway" that stretches between Pilot Rock to the south and Pendleton to the north, roughly in parallel to Highway 395.
With the exception of the occasional rolling hill in the early miles of the race, and a significant uphill climb around the mile 8 marker, as runners are turning off Sparks Station Road onto Coombs Canyon Road (and this hill is a big one, as runners will climb roughly 200 feet between the mile 8 and mile 9 markers), nearly all of the rest of the course follows a gradual downhill descent between the start and the finish line, which lies at Pendleton Community Park.
Registration will be available on the day of the race starting at 6:00 AM, and runners in the half marathon should note that they'll need to park at the finish line area and take the shuttle bus to the starting line, which will begin boarding at 7:00 AM. The starting time for the half marathon is scheduled for 7:30 AM, while those running the 10K and 5K races will follow out-and-back courses from the park that start at 8:30 AM.
