Event
Details
An all-women's half marathon race that is held each spring on Mother's
Day and whose proceeds support Portland's local Raphael House women's
shelter, the Hippie Chick Half Marathon, Quarter Marathon and Fun Run
takes hundreds of runners on a double-loop course along the bike paths,
riverside
trails and rolling country roads that wind through Oregon's Champoeg
State Heritage Area, a 615-acre park on the banks of the Willamette
River that also plays host to the Champoeg
Half Marathon in the fall.
From the starting line at the park's Oak Grove Day Use area, the race
route takes runners first along the bike path near the park's southern
border, roughly parallel to the park roads. Runners follow the path as
it winds through the forested areas of the park and then head back onto
the park road for a couple of miles, only to re-enter the thickly
wooded section of the park to the east of Oak Grove, and head towards
the river. Once they're close the river, runners then make their way
east along the bike path for the next few miles, hitting the turnaround
just off Shuler Road.
After doing an about-face at the turnaround point, runners head back in
the direction they came along the bike path parallel to the Willamette,
and head back toward the Oak Grove area, where they start the second
loop of the double-loop course and run the route they've just run all
over again. While much of the course is flat and
fast and features paved surfaces, runners will encounter some gravel
surfaces as well as a few rolling hills throughout the park.
The one-mile fun run for kids portion of the event will start at 8:30
AM, followed by the half and quarter marathon starts at 9:00 AM. The
race is limited to 900 runners for all events combined -- just over 500
runners crossed the finish line in the half marathon alone in 2008, and
the races are open to both runners and walkers.
