Oregon > Klamath County Run for Kids Half Marathon, 10K & 5K
Klamath Falls, OR  •  Sunday, July 20, 2014  •  Course Map

Set for its 5th annual running in 2014 in this small Oregon city that's surrounded by mountains and perhaps best known as the starting point for exploring nearby park areas like Crater Lake National Park and the nearby Mountain Lakes Wilderness Area, the Klamath County Run for Kids Half Marathon, 10K & 5K usually sees several dozen runners cross the finish line each year.

The race is an event sponsored by Citizens for Safe Schools, a locally-based nonprofit that reaches out to at-risk children in 4th through 8th grade and provides mentoring relationships with adults, in the style of the well-known Big Brother/Big Sister program, to help them navigate the often difficult years of the middle grades.

While the Run for Kids Half Marathon focuses on promoting physical fitness among both children and adults, it also helps to raise the profile of the organization's "Character Counts" campaign.

Runners follow an out-and-back course for the half marathon and the 5K, both of which start and finish at the Steen Sports Complex on Foothills Boulevard, just east of Klamath Falls.

From there, the course winds from the starting point on the road between the soccer and baseball fields all around the sports complex, and then into the neighborhoods just east of the park, where runners will spend most of their time running through residential areas on a long, looping stretch along Patterson Street, Kimberly Drive and then back onto Foothills Boulevard.

After the stretches through the neighborhoods east of the park -- which take up most of the early and middle miles of the race -- the second half unfolds with a long, out-and-back straightaway stretch that runs west of the Steen Sports Complex, along Foothills Blvd. Once runners reach the turnaround and head back, they'll make one final loop through the park and pass the starting line area to finish along its eastern edge on Ward Street.

The terrain for the race is made up mostly of paved roads, but runners can expect trails as well, as about 3 miles of the course is made up of dirt trails, largely the sections through the sports complex.

It's also hilly and challenging, race organizers note, so arrive ready to run lots of uphills and downhills. There's lots of views of the scenery all around Klamath Falls during the race as well, highlighted by Mount Shasta off in the distance.
