Oregon > Runaway Pumpkin Half Marathon

Set for its 3rd annual running on the Saturday before Halloween in this small western Oregon city, the Runaway Pumpkin Half Marathon will take runners on an out-and-back loop course that unfolds along the banks of the Santiam River, giving runners a chance to run along either side of the river and make a pair of bridge crossings before heading back in to the race finish line.
Runners (as well as volunteers and spectators) who come out for the race will also help to support a worthy cause for local area residents, as proceeds from the race and sponsorship gifts will be donated to the ABC House Child Abuse Assessment Center, a locally-based nonprofit that handles as many as 500 cases of child abuse each year.
The course for the race will start on Weirich Drive near the shore of Cheadle Lake. From there, runners will follow a counter-clockwise loop route that heads north into Lebanon, along River Drive, Russell Drive and Franklin Street before turning on Oak Street to head up to East Grant Street. Once they make it to East Grant, runners then head over the river across the bridge, past River Park.
Once over the river, runners turn right onto Berlin Road and remain on Berlin for about the next five and a half miles, making their way up a very gradual uphill stretch over the miles along the river. Most of the rest of the course keeps runners along the river (except for a stretch between mile markers 7 and 8), as runners cross a second bridge around the mile 9 marker and head into Waterloo. Once they make the turn at Waterloo, the course then brings runners northwest back toward Cheadle Lake, back to the finish line at the boat ramp.
The scheduled starting time for the race is 9:00 AM, and runners will need to be able to complete the race's 13.1 miles within 4 1/2 hours. The race also will be limited to 1,500 runners.
Race Weather & Climate
Nestled along the banks of the Santiam River in western Oregon, about 35 miles south of Salem and roughly 80 miles south of Portland, Lebanon typically sees October temperatures that average between 40°F and 64°F, while rainfall totals average just over 4.3 inches for the month.
On the day of the race (Oct. 19), the average low is 40°F and the average high is 62°F.
