Event Details

More than 4,000 runners and walkers crossed the finish line in all three races combined at the fall 2009 running of Portland's Run Like Hell Half Marathon, 10K & 5K, a Halloween-themed race that sees participants dress out for the event in full costume for a run through this city's urban parks and along its waterfront areas along the Willamette River. Now something of a running tradition in Portland, the race celebrated its 7th annual running in 2009, and welcomed more than 1,500 runners and walkers for the half-marathon race alone.

From the starting line near downtown's Pioneer Square Park at the corner of Broadway Avenue and Taylor Street, the course takes runners through the city's Pearl District and includes scenic views of the changing autumn leaves as well as Tom McCall Waterfront Park, Duniway Park, Terwilliger Park and Mount Hood off in the distance. After starting off with mostly flat terrain for the first five miles, the course then begins a three-mile gradual uphill that takes runners along Naito Parkway and Barbur Boulevard.

By the time participants reach the eighth mile marker, the course again flattens out as it follows along the western edge of Portland's George Hines Park, taking runners along the winding Terwilliger Boulevard northward through the city. The course continues its wind along the edge of the parks, passing by Terwilliger Park and through Duniway Park, for the home stretch of the race, which is a slight downhill slope toward the finish line back at the starting line near Pioneer Square.

The race is run entirely on paved surfaces along the city's downtown streets and park roads, and race organizers ask that runners who cannot finish the half marathon with a pace of at most 15 minutes per mile run instead in the 10K race, which shares the same 7:30 AM start time as the half marathon. The 5K race starting time follows at 8:45 AM, and the event also includes a half-mile "Kids Dash," which starts at 8:20 AM.
