Details
After a year's absence from Oregon's road running calendar in 2008, the
Vernonia Half Marathon -- which was canceled
by its organizers (the Oregon Road Runners Club) due to flooding and
related damage in the northwestern Oregon -- was back on the schedule
for 2009, and saw 160 runners cross the finish line, in line with the
roughly 150 to 200
runners it has in past years.
Like in past years, the Vernonia Half features an
out-and-back course that takes runners largely along the Banks-Vernonia
State Trail, a local rails-to-trails project that has converted 21
miles of formerly used railroad into a tree-lined paved and gravel
trail through Oregon's picturesque woodlands for walkers, runners,
bikers, hikers, horseback riders and inline
skaters, as well as families bringing their children out in strollers.
Generally fast and flat throughout most of the 13.1 miles of the race,
the course starts and finishes at Vernonia's Anderson Park, which lies
not far from town at the southern end of Jefferson and Adams Avenues,
near where the Nehalem River and Rock Creek come together. The course
features a few rolling hills along the way, and runners also will cross
several roads during the
course of the race, but the route is otherwise closed to automobile
traffic.

Weather & Climate
Nestled up among Oregon's Cascade Mountains, about an hour's drive
northwest from Portland, the town of Vernonia can experience weather
that's still quite cold in the early spring, as average monthly
temperatures in April range between 58°F and 35°F.
Rainfall is always a possibility this time of year, as area
precipitation averages nearly 3
3/4 inches during the month.
