Set for its seventh annual running in the spring of 2012 -- after the race's 2011 running saw just over 450 runners cross the finishl in both races combined, including more than 300 runners in the half marathon alone -- Oregon's Vernonia Marathon & Half Marathon takes runners on a fast, flat and scenic course along the trails that wind along the rivers and creeks near the city here in the state's northeastern corner.
Like in past years, the Vernonia Half features an out-and-back course that takes runners largely along the Banks-Vernonia State Trail, a local rails-to-trails project that has converted 21 miles of formerly used railroad into a tree-lined paved and gravel trail through Oregon's picturesque woodlands for walkers, runners, bikers, hikers, horseback riders and inline skaters, as well as families bringing their children out in strollers.
Generally fast and flat throughout most of the 13.1 miles of the race, the course starts and finishes at Vernonia's Anderson Park, which lies not far from town at the southern end of Jefferson and Adams Avenues, near where the Nehalem River and Rock Creek come together. The course features a few rolling hills along the way, and runners also will cross several roads during the course of the race, but the route is otherwise closed to automobile traffic.

Nestled up among Oregon's Cascade Mountains, about an hour's drive northwest from Portland, the town of Vernonia can experience weather that's still quite cold in the early spring, as average monthly temperatures in April range between 58°F and 35°F -- on the day of the race (April 15), the average high is 58°F and the average low is 35°F. Rainfall is always a possibility this time of year, as area precipitation averages just over 3.7 inches during the month.
