Pennsylvania > Gettysburg Blue-Gray Half Marathon & 5K
Gettysburg, PA  •  Sunday, October 20, 2013  •  Course Map

Runners will get the chance to run through history -- and take part in a bit of a Civil War re-enactment of their own -- at the Gettysburg Blue-Gray Half Marathon & 5K, which is set to make its 3rd annual running along the country roads that lie just north of this historic small city in southern Pennsylvania, just miles from the historic battlefield where the Union army turned the tide against the South in 1863.

Inspired in part by the success of the Gettysburg North-South Marathon & Relay, the organizers plan to set up a "north/south" competition for this fall half marathon as well: Runners from the North and the South will compete in "teams" set up by the race, in which points will be awarded to the winners from each category. The side whose runners earn the most points by the end of the race will be awarded a prize at the finish line awards ceremonies.

The race itself will also have a unique feature in that runners from each "side" -- North vs. South -- will run the course in different directions. All runners will share the same starting and finish line, which lies at the Straban Township Recreation Park just to the northeast of downtown Gettysburg. From there, both the Northern and Southern running teams will share the same course for the first two miles, which unfold along Smith Road and Weaner Road, out to the first turn at the intersection with Old Harrisburg Road.

Once runners reach Old Harrisburg Road, those running in the "South" team will split off from those running with their "North" compatriots, as the two teams will run the next eight-mile loop portion of the race in opposite directions of one another. This loop stretch unfolds along Boyds School Road, Miller Road, Good Intent Road and Shrivers Corner Road before bringing runners back onto Old Harrisburg Road, where they make their way back to Weaner Road for the final couple of miles that bring them back to the Straban Township Park for the race finish.

Though the course will differ depending on the team in which you run the loop stretch, the course features some rolling hills along these country roads, but no really challenging uphills or downhills, and organizers add that the course is flat enough to offer runners a chance to achieve a personal record time.

At the point where the North and South teams split around mile 2, those running with the North team will turn left on Old Harrisburg Road and make a clockwise loop along Boyds School, Miller, Good Intent and Shrivers Corner Roads, while those running with the South team will turn right and run it in a counter-clockwise direction.

The race starting time is 9:00 AM, and the half marathon is limited to 1,000 entrants while the 5K is limited to 500. Runners in the half will have three hours to complete their 13.1 miles.
