Details
With a course that takes runners along a converted railroad corridor
that is now in use as a paved, multi-use recreational trail for
runners, walkers, bikers and even cross-country skiers, the Mahoning
Shadow Shuffle Half Marathon race also includes a 10K run and a 5K
“fun run,” and provides ample scenery of turning
autumn leaves and the tranquil Mahoning Creek, which parallels the
course throughout the race.
Called the “Shadow Trail” because it follows the
creek for its entire 15.5 miles, the trail and race course reveals both
the modern and the historical aspects of this western Pennsylvania
town, situated about 90 miles northeast of Pittsburgh and 100 miles
south of Erie. Along the mostly paved trail (it also includes a few
gravel sections), runners will get to run across a newly-converted
train trestle bridge and see the ovens that were once used to burn coal
to produce coke for the area’s steel industry.
Also along the course, runners will see a climb in elevation as the
race runs through
Punxsutawney’s scenic highland areas, at last reaching the
spot known as the “Devil’s Elbow” near
the town of Hudson, where runners can also see a waterfall. The race
starts at 9:00 AM at the Punxsutawney Little League Field on Route 119.

Weather & Climate
Perhaps best known as the place the entire country looks to every
Groundhog Day (February 2) for signs of more winter or an early spring,
the town of Punxsutawney tends to enjoy mild to cool weather in the
early weeks of fall. October temperatures average between 39°F
and 59°F, while rainfall averages about 3.23 inches for the
month.

Half-marathon:
$20 for pre-registered runners
$25 on the day of the race (7:30 AM)
10K:
$20 for pre-registered runners
$25 on race day (7:30 AM)
5K:
$15 for pre-registered runners
$17 on race day (7:30 AM)
