Pittsburgh, PA

Event Details

Run along a paved multi-use trail that once served as a railroad connecting Pittsburgh with nearby towns and cities, the IKEA Montour Trail Half-Marathon & 5K showcases this “rails to trails” recreational initiative that will eventually become part of a 400-mile trail system known as the Great Allegheny Passage, and will link the city by pedestrian trail with Washington, D.C.

Mostly flat, fast and scenic, the out-and-back race course starts at the Ikea in Robinson Township and follows a long downhill stretch toward the nearby town of Imperial, where runners reach the half-way turn-around. From there, participants return back to the trail (which features a crushed limestone surface) and continue running to the finish at Robinson Town Centre, including running through a tunnel along the way.

Just over 600 runners competed the half-marathon portion of the event in 2007, while 210 runners took part in the 5K events – including a 5K run and a 5K “fun walk.” All race proceeds go towards the maintenance and preservation of the Montour Trail.

Race Weather & Climate

The month of September tends to bring mild to warm weather to the Pittsburgh area, with temperatures that average between 53°F and 76°F. Rainfall is always a possibility, as precipitation averages about 3.13 inches for the month.
