Pennsylvania > Peace Love Run 13.1 Half Marathon & 5K Run/Walk
Allison Park, PA  •  Sunday, June 23, 2013  •  Course Map

Set for its second annual running just after the official start of the summer season in late June 2013, the all-new Peace Love Run 13.1 Half Marathon & 5K Run/Walk is set to take runners on an out-and-back double-loop course along the park roads and trails of western Pennsylvania's North Park, which lies near McCandless, Hampton and Pine townships and just a short drive from nearby Allison Park.

The race is organized and sponsored by the Wexford, Pa.-based Catholic Hospice, which provides hospice care to the nearby counties of Washington, Beaver, Butler and Allegheny -- it's "the only free-standing, faith-based, pro-life hospice in the Pittsburgh area," as the organization describes its mission. Proceeds from the race will go to benefit Catholic Hospice and its special care programs for all those it serves in the surrounding community with life-limiting illnesses.

Runners will start both the half marathon and the 5K -- the 13.1-mile race is open to runners only, while both runners and walkers are welcome in the 5K -- at the boathouse inside North Park, whose more than 3,000 acres have been preserved as parkland since 1927, and today are home to protected habitats for endangered species such as the Barn Owl (thanks to the park's Latodami Nature Center) and quirky historical artifacts like the North Park Story Pole, on which the "stories" of the wildlife and Native American tribes who have lived in this area over time have been carved.

From the starting line at the boathouse, runners in the half marathon will follow the park roads and trails around North Park Lake twice to make a double loop, before heading back in to the boathouse for the race finish. The park's plentiful trails and large, expansive meadows and tree-covered hillsides make it a popular place for joggers, walkers and bikers throughout most of the year, and runners in the half will cover some of those popular trails during the race.

The scheduled starting time for the half marathon is 7:30 AM, followed by the 5K start at 8:00 AM. Runners can expect the course to have some hills, organizers add, but nothing too challenging.
