Details
Recognizing the growing popularity of the half-marathon across the
country, the organizers of Philadelphia’s Marathon added a
13.1-mile version of the race for the first time at the running of the
2006 race, and the response was overwhelming with nearly 2,000
finishers for the event’s inaugural half. That makes it
possible for even more people to enjoy what is known across the country
as a “race through history,” which takes runners
past many of the city’s (and the nation’s) most
historic landmarks and sights.
Fast and flat just like its 26.2-mile older brother, the Philadelphia
Half Marathon takes runners along a course that begins near historic
City Hall and runs in the first few miles past the waterfront at
Penn’s Landing (the area also known as the “Old
City”) along the banks of the Delaware River and past
Independence Hall, where the Declaration of Independence was signed on
July 4, 1776 and where the Liberty Bell still stands. From there, the
race course continues through the city and runs parallel to the
Schuylkill River, past the Zoo and Memorial Hall and back to the finish
line at the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
Though half-marathon participants should expect to finish before the
course closes, the event organizers plan to keep the course open for 7
hours, from the (early!) starting time of 7:00 AM. There’s
also prize money for the top finishers -- $2,500 for the top male and
female finishers, and $1,000 to second place in each category.
The event also includes an 8K (4.97-mile) run and a short-distance
kids’ fun run for children ages 4 through 12, which will
include distances appropriate for each age. The 8K, meanwhile, begins
at the same starting line and offers views of a few of the same sights
