Sandy Lake, PA

Date

Event Details

Just over 120 runners crossed the finish line in both races combined at the spring 2009 running of Sandy Lake's Prep For Pittsburgh Half Marathon & 5K, with exactly 80 runners completing the half marathon that takes runners around the edges of Lake Wilhelm in Goddard State Park, a 2,856-acre park just north of town that is home to abundant forest lands, wetlands and wide-open meadows as well as wildlife like eagles, ospreys and many other species of waterfowl.

Both the 13.1-mile half marathon and the 5K races share the same starting location, at the state park office on Wilhelm Road, overlooking the more than 1,800-acre Lake Wilhelm. From there, runners in the half follow the hiking and biking trail that encircles the lake, a roughly 12-mile paved trail that follows the lake shoreline from the boat launch area to the park's marina. The half marathon follows a counter-clockwise route around the lake, and finishes back at the marina parking lot.

While the half marathon begins at 10:00 AM, the 5K race will start shortly afterward, at 10:05 AM. Those who haven't yet registered before arriving will be able to register at the park on the day of the race, until 9:45 AM.
